Simeon and the Child Jesus
Probably 16th century or later
Franciscan Monastery, Zadar, Croatia
The statue represents Simeon's embrace of Jesus when the child was taken to the Temple (Luke 2:25-32). It could once have been part of a Presentation in the Temple group, but now it stands by itself in a group of four statues of different subjects in the same medium and style.
Presentation images with a fully naked child are seen occasionally in the 15th century and become common in the 16th.
